Improving the emotional, practical and financial challenges of cancer

Covid restrictions made life difficult for all the people affected by cancer, Cancercare needed to improve their experience to provide help and support in a closed economy.

The client

In 2020, an estimated 1,806,590 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 606,520 people will die from the disease.

Founded in 1944, CancerCare is the leading national organization providing free, professional support services and information to help people manage the emotional, practical and financial challenges of cancer.

The pandemic was pivotal for changing the way the organization worked in order to better serve their customers.

The objective

We were commissioned to design a new look that represented the transition of the organization to a more digital presence.

The client had invested years building a CMS to handle the amount of content created for the organization.

It was important to keep what worked and improved the rough edges of the experience for the end user.

The first step was revising the font weights and colors. We reduced the weight of the fonts to provide a more stylized and calming experience while reading the site.

We also extended the range of colors used on the site, to handle a more diverse set of cases.

Improved Navigation

The header is a clear indication of where the user is and what is the page is about. We transformed the titles into a mix of pictures and text to a more brand recognisable element offering more specific information.

“We worked with other designers, but Leo was the one able to materialize successfully the changes we have been discussing for years.”

Jacqueline Zahora, Director, Digital Communications, cancercare

Better Heroes

The headers is a clear indication of where the user is and what is the page is about, we transformed the headers into a mix of pictures and text to a more brand recognisable element offering clearer information.

Every page has a clear hierarchy that displays all the relevant information. All the components are responsive and adapt to the mobile view.

Components were redesigned to fit nicely on every breakpoint and mobile device.

Improved Iconography

A new Iconography was created to represent most of the activities handled by the CMS.
